New poem -- minty fresh!

Scoliosis

Had God been at all square with us, the quadrants of her back
would divide as logically as the Four Corners.
And had her spine followed the easy cartography of the desert,
she would have walked that line all the way from Dinosaur, Colorado
to Rodeo, New Mexico. However, in this land, where smallpox blankets were gifts, and innocents were shackled to fields,
Her backbone cut into her like the blue Rio Grande. So to save her, to standardize her,
men weld heavy rebar to the bone. A brutal blessing.
Or this new hardware is railroad track:
a means to a fast, fresh era--
the low Western sun stinging her eyes.
