Breaking point

I've decided that my breaking point has arrived, so I'm going to be on foot, bike, and bus as much as possible this summer (exceptions will be occasional forays to SLC and Bear Lake). I'm just glad I live in a very walkable town, and that I don't have to worry about having to haul kids around, etc. What's your breaking point? How much will be too much? And what will you do to cope?

I've also been thinking a lot lately about money-saving tactics, even to the point of wishing I was more savvy about DIY stuff Can you offer any handy DIYs or clever money-saving tips? (If anyone wants to teach me how to can, I'd be very very happy.)

Even though a recession can be painful, I think it can also be a good thing -- to make us more conscious of our habits and consumption, and to make us more self-sufficient. Scaling back might even make us healthier.

First grow a garden with vegies you want to eat. Second, date a generous butcher, or cattle man with a ranch of cows and chickens. Then, attend workshops that will teach skills, the Relief Society usually holds them. We have one for the stake coming up on Saturday, June 14. Join in as a volunteer when friends are canning, to learn how. Schaefermeyers do a lot of freezing and canning too I think. Darlene Elggren too. Let's see, Pres. Stevenson and Mickey. Maybe Melanie. Maybe you can borrow my book, All About Canning.

My favorite idea of survival is to have an equipped camper or trailer. They have propane and a stove, etc. And you can keep warm in cold weather. Keep dry in ....... HEY! Is this the longest comment in all of history???

luckily we live right by the flying j, which we've decided is about as cheap as it gets. we have to drive because you can't walk anywhere clear out here. and the bus just makes it to hard to get around, though we should use it a little more. and we don't work much in a week so we don't go places much. and we eat like college kids, so, that's not a problem. ramen. canned peas. it's all pretty cheap.

Don't tell anyone....but...I have a little oil rig in my closet....yeah, I'm still working on my refining capacity.

I'm not sure, but I think it's damaging the polar bears. But don't worry. I plan on buying a plasma TV to even things out! :P

All this just tells me I need to get a motorcycle. Sure I live in Colorado where it snows a lot, but during the summer months I could save a ton on gas.

That or I could take a sleeping bag and pillow to work with me on Monday and just stay there till Friday.

Nancy Pelosi said that they'd fix the gas prices if they got elected. I think any day now we'll be sub $2 a gallon.

My solution: I'm going to convert my car to a CNG car (63 cents a gallon, baby!). It costs about $1500 for a kit (YOW!) but I drive a LOT so I calculated that I can easily have it paid off within a year....AND I won't be supporting those SOB's who are having record breaking profits! Argh!

Yeah for free bus! And also canning, gardening, all that good stuff. I need to learn more about.

I'm even thinking about cloth diapers - no joke. The new ones are supposed to be really nice. I know, crazy eh?

MOM - lay off the full names/last names...remember how worried you are about internet safety?!
